Tribute: Herbert Nowlin did it all in the service of love

Herbert David Nowlin Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, in Ventura, California, at the age of 82.

Born on October 22, 1942, in Tipton, Oklahoma, Herbert grew up with a strong sense of family, integrity, and quiet determination that guided him throughout his life. He was a man of deep character and steady presence, always offering strength, wisdom, and kindness to those around him.

Herbert was a man deeply dedicated to service — a proud Navy pilot during the Vietnam War, and an immigration and family law attorney who devoted his career to advocating for and guiding others through life’s most challenging moments. His proudest moment was winning Soria v. Oxnard School District, a desegregation case he successfully fought all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

He also served with pride as a leader and member of Toastmasters International for more than 40 years, inspiring and mentoring countless individuals through his unwavering commitment to communication, leadership, and personal growth.

He built a beautiful life alongside his beloved, Creda. Together for more than 50 years, they raised two daughters, Sara and Mandi, who brought him endless pride and joy, despite jumping out of “perfectly good airplanes” while skydiving.

His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his calm and thoughtful nature, and the many quiet acts of love and generosity that defined his days.

Herbert will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
